Japan er en af de ældste og mest berømte tatoveringskulturer i verden. Tatovering eller irezumi i Japan kan spores tilbage til cirka 10.000 BCX. Gennem tiden, tatovering'plads i det japanske samfund har svinget – stort set i en del af det's forbindelse med organiseret kriminalitet. I dag, i mange dele af Japan, er tatovering gået under jorden, og kunstnere skal være ekstremt hemmelighedsfulde om processen.
